TWO of the most important and well-paid jobs in Lake Macquarie, worth about $200,000 each a year, are up for grabs.

Lake Macquarie City Council has called for applications for its director of operations and director of community development roles.

The positions arose after the council split its city services directorate in two, increasing its directorates from three to four.

Council general manager Brian Bell created the new directorates as an interim measure when former city services director Ron Posselt resigned last year.

Mr Bell appointed Amanda Colbey and Morven Cameron to head the directorates for a six-month trial period. It is over and councillors voted last week to approve the new directorates.

Mr Bell said the new positions had been advertised in The Sydney Morning Herald and on the internet. Applications are open until February 19.

Ms Colbey and Ms Cameron came from Ku-ring-gai Council where Mr Bell was general manager before joining Lake Macquarie council.

Asked if he had hand-picked Ms Colbey and Ms Cameron, Mr Bell said: "No, that's a myth".

A panel, including Mr Bell, Mayor Greg Piper and an independent executive, will interview short-listed applicants and select preferred candidates but Mr Bell will make the final decision.
